Sketchy Saturday: Sturdy Robot Unicycle
Another Saturday, another sketch. This one started to quickly turn into a robot, so I just went with it.
The process was pretty much the same as before.
1:33: At this point, I really liked the powerful joints of the robot, but I wasn’t sure how to proceed on the forearms. I decided to make some separate layers and experiment around with different arm shapes. This gave me the freedom to not have to commit to anything just yet.
1:51: I couldn’t decide what to do, so I started working on another area and figured I’d come back to the forearms later.
1:57: Unicycle support is too straight, needed to bend and give more under the weight of the upper body.
3:35: Critical mistake; I decided at this point that I’d be cool to have the background all hazy with a warm glow from the sun behind the robot. What I didn’t consider was that shading, and I continued to shade the robot as if the light source was from above. I’ll know better next time.
5:06: Using white to add highlights onto the robot from the energy glows coming from his hands.
7:55: I think I should have pushed the glow from the eye and chest more at this point. In retrospect, I don’t think it’s apparent that the eye and chest lights are really glowing.
8:21: So, like I said earlier, this is where the conflicting light sources start to get apparent. There should be more shadow on the front of the robot and bright rim lights on the back and sides of him.
8:45: Adding the sunset coloring. Again, this is done on a separate layer with the blending mode set to “soft light.” This type of layer blending mode take the grey values from previous layers and adding saturation, the color of the brush and some lighter value tones. It’s kind of like using the dodge tool and adding color at the same time.
There you have it. If you have any questions about the sketch that I failed to mention, just ask away in the comments section and I’ll be happy to answer.

Wow! I was actually browsing http://www.pixelgirlpresents.com, when I saw a desktop you had made >> clicked the link to your website >> Ended up in this place.
I’m just a teen, but I LOVELOVELOVELOVE your work. -completely and utterly amazed-
:’D I could never even dream to make such amazing animations at the drop of a hat like you did; however, I love admiring others’ work. :]
Thanks a lot. It’s true; I can bust out a sweet sketch every now and then, but my batting average isn’t 100 percent. The really good ones make it onto this site, but for every video I post, I’ve made 3-4 sketches that weren’t good enough to make the cut.
I tend to post stuff on here about 1-2 times a week, so check back for more Holy Robot goodness.
